Notting Hillbillies Tour

Il 31 maggio del 1986 al The Grove Pub, di Leeds (UK), Mark Knopfler, Steve Phillips e Brendan Croker, si ritrovarono a suonare insieme brani Blues.

Questa serata segna la data d'inizio del sodalizio tra i tre amici, ai quali si aggiungerà poi Guy Fletcher, e che porterà alla nascita di una band dal sapore country - rock e blues. La band sarà denominata Notting Hillbillies. Notting Hill era il quartiere di Londra in cui erano soliti incontrarsi e Hillbilly è un vocabolo che indica una persona semplice ed umile, quindi usando un gioco di parole, vollero caratterizzare il loro stile musicale, visto che col termine “hillbilly music” viene indicata anche un filone di musica country alternativo e un po' naif. Il 6 marzo 1990 venne pubblicato Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time e il 2 aprile iniziò il tour di 42 tappe, tutte nel Regno Unito, conclusosi il 15 maggio. Oltre a Knopfler, Steve Philips, Brendan Crocker (chitarre e voci) e Guy Fletcher (tastiere e voci) completavano la formazione Paul Franklin alla pedal steel guitar, Marcus Cliffe al basso e Ed Bicknell alla batteria, quest'ultimo manager dei Dire Straits. Negli anni successivi, dopo l'On Every Street Tour e lo scioglimento dei Dire Straits, i Notting Hillbillies tennero occasionali concerti di beneficenza. Nel 93 ci furono due concerti, il 3 luglio si esibì il trio Knopfler, Crocker, Philips in uno spettacolo acustico durante il quale vennero eseguite How Long e Ticket to Heaven dei Dire Straits. Il 6 luglio, Guy Fletcher, non era disponibile e fu sostituito da Alan Clark. Fu l'ultima apparizione di Clark al fianco di Mark Knopfler. La band tenne poi un concerto nel 94 e due nel 96. Nel 1997 invece fecero un tour di 11 tappe.

Altro tour nel 1998 con 6 concerti al Ronnie Scott's di Birmingham, poi uno spettacolo di beneficenza a Taplow Court a favore di War Child, e 11 concerti al Ronnie Scott's di Londra dove il 24 Luglio è stato ospite Lonnie Donegan. Il 31 Luglio Chris Barber e l' 1 Agosto Pat Cromley. Nel luglio 99 ci furono altri sei concerti al Ronnie Scott's di Londra, tra i vari ospiti Chris White che era stato in tour con i Dire Straits dal BIA tour. Nel luglio 2002 ci fu una tournèe denominata "Mark Knopfler & Friends". Quattro concerti i cui incassi furono devoluti in beneficenza a quattro diverse associazioni caritevoli. Nella prima parte di ogni spettacolo Mark Knopfler si esibiva con i Notting Hillbillies mentre nella seconda con John Illsley, Guy Fletcher, Chris White, Danny Cummings, Robbie McIntosh, Geraint Watkins, Jools Holland, Bobby Valentino e Jimmy Nail. Fu l'occasione per suonare nuovamente con John Illsley dopo lo scioglimento dei Dire Straits. Durante i concerti vennero eseguite anche Quality Shoe e Why Aye Man che vennero pubblicate in "The ragpicker's Dream" il 30 settembre successivo.
