Mark, guarito dall'incidente in moto occorsogli il 17 marzo 2003, che lo costrinse ad annullare il tour dell'album The ragpicker's Dream, torna 'on the road' con il tour di supporto all'album Shangri-La pubblicato il 2 settembre 2004. La tournèe partì da Johannesburg il 28 febbraio 2005 e terminò il 31 luglio dello stesso anno a Vancouver per 104 concerti in 95 città. La prima fase, dal 28 febbraio al 21 marzo, toccò Sudafrica, Emirati Arabi, India, Australia e Nuova Zelanda. La seconda fase, in Europa, si svolse dal 1 aprile al 15 giugno ed infine la terza, in America, dal 24 giugno fino alla serata conclusiva di Vancouver del 31 luglio.
La formazione ha visto, rispetto al 2001, Matt Rollings al posto di Geraint Watkins al piano, l'assenza di Mike Henderson e il ritorno di Danny Cummings già in tour con Mark Knopfler come percussionista all'epoca dei Dire Straits nell'On Every Street Tour. Danny Cummings ha sostituito dal 1 aprile Chad Cromwell alla batteria che ha dovuto lasciare per motivi personali.
